SENATOR BENJAMIN UWAJUMOGU'S MOTION ON EXCISE TARIFF PASSED BY SENATE

The erudite and indefatigable Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu representing Imo North has continued to churn out people oriented Bills and Motions at the upper chambers with the presentation of a new Motion on the:

URGENT NEED TO REVIEW THE PROPOSED EXCISE TARIFF INCREMENT IN ORDER TO SAVE LOCAL DISTILLERS OF BEVERAGES FROM LOOMING EXTINCTION.

The motion brought the present situation which is 20% Excise Duty paid by local distillers presently while the FG is making a proposal to increase the Tariffs to 67%, above 300%, a development Senate thinks is dangerous to the growth of the industry in Nigeria.

Moreso the industry as pointed out has about 250,000 Nigerians whose future are tied to the industry either directly or indirectly, and these people are in danger of loosing their jobs if FG implements this new Tariff policy on locally produce alcoholic products and tobacco.

This development the Senate feels will trigger job losses in that industry in our already reeling economy with little or no new job opportunities for the many qualified youths of Nigeria coupled with under-employment for the few who are opportuned to be hanging in somewhere in the name of employment.

According to the Minister of Finance, the policy is supposed to take effect from June 4th this year 2018. This the Senate feels is dangerous and hasty hence resolved to call on FG to suspend the proposed Tariff until the issues are exhaustively dealt with and all the grey areas are cleared with all stake holders on board in the interest of our economy.

The efforts of Senator Uwajumogu in bringing up issues that are of great interest to Nigerians and youths in Particular at the upper chamber is extra ordinary and deserves recognition by all Nigerians.
