In today’s plenary, our
indefatigable Senator Stella Oduah Co-Sponsored
Motion on Children’s Day Celebration to mark the incoming Children’s Day
on May 27th.
In the Motion, she and other
Co-sponsors highlighted the plights of our today’s Children which has deprived
them of many benefits attendant to children all over the world and even
Nigerian Children of yester-years.
One of such benefits
which has not been fully implemented in Nigeria today is the National Health
Act of 2014. The Act gives pregnant women, the elderly, the disabled and children
right for free medical services in all public hospitals. But to the chagrin of
everyone including the Senators, the Act is still not fully implemented across
the country. This has created room for the continued infant and maternal mortality
rate.
The Motion also called
for the development of Nigerian Child through following legislations:
i.
The Child Rights Act 2003
ii.
Universal Basic Education Act 2004
All the members of the
red chambers contributed in support of the motion. There were unanimous calls
for the following:
·
Free basic education for the Nigerian
Child
·
Free Medical services for the Nigerian
child
·
Adequate food for the Nigerian child at
least in schools
Contributing further on
the floor, Senator Ben Bruce criticised our population explosion and said it’s
a time bomb that will explode very soon if we do not make legislations to
control it like China. This he said is the root of the growing vulnerable children
who have become pawns for the people close to them for rape and all kinds of
child abuse.
Finally the Senate
called for intensive efforts to release Leah Sharibu and other Boko Haram Children still missing.
Speaking conclusively,
Senate President Bukola Saraki congratulated Nigerian Children on behalf of the
Senate and National Assembly as a whole. He called for a foundation of love and
care for our children.
He concluded by calling
for the passage of Children Rights Act in the State Assemblies.
