The Senate has passed a motion to support and approve the mere Executive pronouncement of June 12 as the New Democracy Day by Buhari.
Meanwhile, it came with alot of heated debates on the floor. Senator Olujumi who moved the motion called for recognition of Abiola as the former President of Nigeria, payment of all his benefits and allowances, recognition of Ambassador Kingibe who is still alive as Former Vice President of Nigeria etc
Contributing, DSP Ekweremmadu said, since we are in the mood of rewriting all injustices in the nation, we must address all of them holistically and not just June 12 alone. Accordingly, it should be on record that Abiola was President and Kingibe was his Vice President. He went ahead to say that the implication is that June 12 should be the day every new President is sworn in according to the constitution. So for that to be in effect, we will need to amend the constitution alongside to this current reality.
Finally Saraki in his closing remarks said its obvious that the family of Abiola have not gotten the recognition they deserve hence its necessary to put that into effect.
The Senate finally agreed to June 12 as the new Democracy Day, all allowances due to Abiola and Kingibe should be accorded to them and finally May 29th should remain as the inauguration Day in Nigeria.
