Senator Godswil Akpabio, the uncommon Minority Leader of the the Senate spoke during the sessions of the National Assembly Open week on Wednesday July 18th, 2018.
Contributing, he said the role of royal fathers is paramount in our system considering their relevance even before the white man came.
He recounted when he was in Uniport as a student. He said, life was sweet and the respect for morals was very high in school then. But the moment Govt stopped all religious worships in schools, cultism became the order of the day. This he said promoted moral decadence in our institutions.
He said taking away the role of traditional rulers through the constitution created the leakages in our systems in form of insecurity, anarchy, terrorism, kidnapping etc
As 10-year-old boy he said he travelled alone to Zaria for military interview without any fear or molestation. Today he said, this is not possible as the level of insecurity in the land indicates that if a 10 year old boy undertakes such journey today, he will be at the mercy of kidnappers, boko haram, fulani herdsmen etc all waiting to hang the Nigerian child and have him for supper.
He called for the need to rejig the role of traditional rulers in our constitution to accommodate their roles again and give them constitutional powers to do same.
He said we cant continue to do same thing over and over again and expect a different result.
Furthermore, he said political parties come and go, but Nigeria remains for all of us. Hence the need for us to preserve our country first before our allegiance to political parties that can end today.
Summarily he said if we indeed we involve our traditional rulers again to take up the responsibility of resolving community issues, peace and tranquility will return to our communities again.
He commended the National Assembly for organising such Open Week as he advocated for a referendum to know the feelings of our people about the direction of our country and how to rejig things for the better.
