The Senate today had a rowdy session over a letter sent by Mr President on nominees for FERMA. Immediately after Senate President Bukola Saraki read the letter, DSP Ekweremmadu raised a Point of Order.
In his Point of Order, he raised questions of lopsided heads of MDAs submitted by Mr President for confirmation in recent times including this particular. He said these appoitments breach our constitutional provisions regarding federal character in all federal appoitments. Many of the heads f these MDAs are from a particular part of the country without respect for our constitions in making these appoitments by spreading it across all geopolitical zones and regions.
This created an uproar in the chamber as many of the senators agreed with the DSP by calling for a review of all this and the need to stop further confirmations until a review of the entire process is done for the interest of equity and fairness.
Senator Bukola Saraki in his wisdom to save the day, immediately mandated the committee on Federal Character to make a revew of Govt appoitments so far and come up with a report of their findings on Tuesday July 24th
Continuing the day's activity, another list of nominees for confirmation for the Federal Civil Service Commission which was number one on the order paper read by Senate Leader with another Chairman of the commission coming from Katsina State did not help matters as the senator shouted down the order stating that this is a true reflection of their agitations of lopsided appoitments by the President with this particular one where he appointed someone from his State Katsina as Chairman of the commission as usual.
Some senators also cited the issue of service chiefs which are all from one side of the country without respect for other parts of the entity called Nigeria.
However, the senate agreed to wait for the report from the Federal Character Committee on Tuesday before further debate on the issue.
