The Nigerian Senate has directed the Police and Army to immediately dismantle all road blocks in South East or at least reduce the number of check points on the roads.
This came through a motion by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa on the Proliferation of Road Blocks on South East Roads.
In the motion, the senator highlighted that the too many road blocks on South East major roads are causing services hardship on the peole with its attendant economic implications.
Goods and services he said can no longer be transported freely within the region due to the intimidation and harassment the people face in the hands of the security operatives.
He wondered why such a high number of police and army will be redeployed to the zone that is known to be very peaceful as against volatile regions of Nigerias where people are being killed daily yet they do not have adequate security to tackle the menace.
Continuing, he said more 50 road blocks with heavily armed police and soldiers are seen on the roads daily.
The senate finally resolved to urge the police and armyy to quickly dismantle or reduce the road blocks in the zone.
Also the senate urged its committee on Police and Army to take a tour of the zone and report back to Senate.
