The uncommmon Senator, Senator Godswill Akpabio contributed on the floor of the senate to the debate and motion on Constituency Projects forced on the Senate by the protesters at the gate of the National Assembly today protesting against Constituency projects.
Contributing, the senator said he was also held up by the protesters at the gate for about 30 minutes while trying to make his way into the premises.
He attributed the issue to the rising unemployement that has displaced many youths with no job to do. Hence they fall prey to the sponsors who obviously promise them little money if they agree to come and protest.
He said as a governor he never denied his legislators their constituency projects because he realized the relevance of the projects.
He said it was not possible for him to know all the nooks and crannies of his state hence the importance of the constituency projects to assuage the needs of those communities he might not be in tune with their needs.
And as a senator, he said his constituency is enjoying constituency projects to the extent that he even extended same gesture to neighbouring senatorial districts in assistance to their respective senators. Presently, he said he has about 22 constituency projects that have been completed so far.
Furthermore, he said he always state its clear that the projects are for the Federal Govt for purpose of clarity.
Continuing, he said most of the contractors are not from his state and he doesnt even know them e.g, a contractor for a borehole in his constituency which is being handled from a contractor from Kebbi State.
So he said it is height of ignorance for some people to besiege the NASS in protest against constituency projects that are not awarded by NASS but mere nomination of the projects while the executive does the funding without the input of the legislature in that regard.
Conclusively, he said Nigerians across all constituencies feel the impact of Govt through constituency projects of National Assembly hence the need for its continuity.
