Distinguished Senator
Stella Oduah sponsored a Bill on NYSC tagged:
NYSC
Act (Amendment) Bill 2017
“An
Act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act, CAP. N84 LFN, 2004 to
provide for free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills by corps
members, and for such related matters.”
The
Bill was designed to curtail the rising unemployment among the youths head-on
by empowering our youths through various forms of skill acquisition that suits
their respective passion. The Bill is at committee stage awaiting Public
Hearing.
It’s
crystal cear that yearly hundreds of Nigerian youths are pushed into the labour
market after one year compulsory NYSC for the nation. During this period, many
are forced to go to many remote areas they have never been to before all in the
bid to perform their primary function as youth corpers to the nation. Many of these youths waste this precious one year
achieving barely nothing rather even jeopardizing their lives in some cases,
while praying that the one year elapses as quick as possible.
Many
of these young people are paid stipends that is not enough to take care of their
feeding let alone savings for life after the service.
When
these young people complete their service, they come out to join the long queue
of unemployed youths seeking employment in our already saturated labour market.
Many
of these youths fall into the waiting hawks called traffickers, yahoo yahoo
masters, kidnappers, prostitutes etc who mock them daily for walking the
streets looking for unemployment that does not exist when they have opportunity
to become rich overnight.
This
pressure sustains as many months go bye no work, no means of survival. The
implication is desperation to survive which metamorphoses into willingness to
do anything at all cost regardless of the implications.
Our
indefatigable senator Oduah realized this challenge, so in consonance with her
passion and vision for the youths, she proposed this bill.
The
Bill will compel FG to include skill acquisition program fully funded for the
youths to diversify their options by learning any skill of interest to them
ranging from fashion and designing, make-up artist, music, movies, catering, et
al. This makes it easy for the youth to prepare and equip his or herself for
the task ahead after the one year service.
The
purpose is to reduce the number of unemployed youths as many will diversify
into various skills they acquired during the period of their service thereby become
entrepreneurs instead of waiting for the white collar jobs that are not
forthcoming.
This
is in tandem with the vision and passion of our dear Senator who has repeatedly
demonstrated her love for our youths. A passion she has consistently demonstrated
by empowering many youths in the constituency to make them self sufficient and
future employers of labour instead of waiting for the depleting job opportunities.
Many
youths of Anambra North are beneficiaries of this ongoing policy which has
changed the lives of many people. As we speak now, many more programs of
similar purpose will be unveiled soon to accommodate the future of many youths
away from paid employment when they can do better as their own boss.
When
this Bill is passed, our National Youths Service will be a window of developing
the entrepreneurial skills of Nigerian youths and building a future that is anchored
on many entrepreneurs that will be future employers of labour as we see in
developed countries of US, Europe, China et al where many people have become
Billionares just by creating their own world through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship.
This
will eventually stimulate the growth of the GDP of our nation vis a vis
reduction of unemployment and alleviation of poverty.
Anambra
North is blessed and lucky to have a visionary leader like our indefatigable Senator
Oduah whose leadership has continued to impact the lives of many especially the
youths.
It
can only get better for our people under her leadership.
