Prior to the campaign landing in South East, there has been speculations in the media that all is not well with the party in the region. Infact,APC stalwarts had boasted that some South East governors including the PDP governors were working against the party for Buhari to win the region.
PDP repeatedly described such speculations as lies that lack any atom of truth and veracity. Infact, PDP went ahead to call on APC to name their governors that are working for them.
Apparently, the campaign team landing in the region became an opportunity to authenticate of dissuade such rumours as emanating from mischief makers seeking to destabilise PDP in the region.
The campaign trail first landed Anambra State. It was opportunity for Peter Obi to prove that the state's political structure is in his palm and that his people are in full support of is candidacy.He absolutely did just that.
The atmosphere was estatic and electrifying. The people were ready to receive their son and his team in a royal manner that will send message across to indicate approbation.
The campaign team knowing how excited the entire Onitsha city was to receive them,decided to ride on an open bus from the palace of Obi of Onitsha down to the Holy Trinity Campaign venue.It was a carnival like road show that got everyone out of the street cheering the team.The situation created heavy gridlock that Peter Obi himself had to come down the bus and continue the rest of the trip by foot waving ,shaking hands to the people. The team was overwhelmed by the reception. Even after the rally,the carnival and party continued all night as people were out discussing the rally an its success across the state.
Atiku after a thunderous ovation signaled his turn to address the excite crowd, promised to finish 2nd Niger Bridge, build infrastructures in the states and restructure Nigeria. He also called on the people to vote PDP as that is the only way the Igbos can hope of clinching the Presidency after him.
The campaign trail moved to Ebonyi state. Ebonyi rally was very vital to PDP considering that their governor Umahi, is the governor wildly speculated that is working for Buhari. It was opportunity for him to tell the whole world where he belongs truly. To buttress this, public places like the markets were closed to allow the people troop out enmasse to welcome the PDP team. As early as 9am, the stadium was full to capacity.
When the team arrived, the governor took time to affirm his full membership of PDP and declared that Ebonyi belongs to PDP.
The campaign train that same day moved to Enugu. It was a total lockdown in Enugu state as the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium was full to capacity with overflows.
The Governor closed public institutions and markets to enable the people show their support to the party. It was also opportunity for Ike Ekweremmadu to fully declare his support of his party to dispel all rumours.
Ekweremmadu declared fully that PDP is his party and the state belongs fully to the party without any equivocation.Ekweremmadu said:
“This is daybreak for us and we are committed to the PDP. They gave us everything in the past and this is time to regain them,” he said
Apparently it was a successful campaign for PDP across the zone even as we await the last state in the east which is Abia State to seal the deal for the party in the zone. Dont forget that the party had its first regional really in Owerri ,ImoState capital.
